"I have always been motivated by an uncontrollable urge to excel in every field of endeavor or adventure
that I have undertaken,"
-- Irv Friedman,
President and owner of
Universal Aircraft
Parts, Inc.

With a degree in aeronautical engineering obtained at the age of 19, Irv answered the anxious calls of this country by enlisting in the Air Force. After graduating 4 Air Force schools with honors, he was assigned to technical work on the B-29 aircraft in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Later, he was shipped to Tinian in the Marina Islands of the South Pacific where he served in the capacity of Flight Engineer on the B-29. His group was credited with helping bring a termination to the war.
Upon being discharged from the Air Force, he moved to Miami and immediately joined Peninsular Air Transport, a young energetic, non-scheduled operation. The company purchased four C-46 aircraft, which were modified, and the company was credited as being one of the first to conform to FAA standards. Nights were spent working at the University of Miami pursuing his Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering.

Shortly thereafter, he was approached by the owners of American Airmotive to join their small group and open a flight service and overhaul operation. This he did by nailing two engine boxes together which served as his office and using the beautiful blue Miami sky for his hangar. The company prospered; within several months, several hundred persons were employed, working 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. At its peak, the company employed over one thousand individuals and had an area of 850,000 square feet. He also project engineered a radically designed aircraft seat and a Rube Goldberg looking machine which was sold to General Electric to test ram-jets, pulse-jets and turbo-jets.

When American Airmotive sold out, he left the company and struck out on his own.
The result, Universal Aircraft Parts, Inc. is now one of the top engine and airframe parts sources. One is awed by the elegance of Universal's buildings, the cleanliness of the warehouse area and the efficiency of the operation.
